  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  2. Cream shortening and sugar together. Add egg and molasses, mix well.
  3. Sift together dry ingredients, add to shortening mixture, alternating with hot water. Mix well.
  4. Drop by rounded teaspoons onto ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 8-10 minutes. Remove from cookie sheet, cool. Frost with Butter Frosting and top each cookie with a walnut.

A soft cookie and although I prefer a firmer texture the flavor is top rate. I did not bother with the frosting and walnut.
