  1. Cook elbow macaroni according to package directions. Drain.
  2. Meanwhile, cut up butter, American cheese, and sharp cheese into 1 inch squares for easy melting. Separate butter and cheeses into two equal size portions.
  3. Begin with one of the butter and cheese portions, microwave on 50% power for 7 minutes. Remove from microwave and stir well. Add second portion of butter and cheese to melted mixture. Microwave an additional 7 minutes on 50% power. Remove and stir well.
  4. Pour cheese mixture over cooked macaroni and stir until noodles are coated with butter and cheese mixture. Allow to stand for 10 minutes before serving.

This recipe is quick, easy, and tasty--when fresh. My only problem is that it doesn't make good leftovers. After being refrigerated, it is nearly impossible to spoon out of the pan since the cheese hardens when it cools, and it doesn't reheat well, all the cheese sinks to the bottom of the pan leaving oily pasta at the top. My son loves mac and cheese and I like to make a lot for dinner and reheat it for his lunch the next day, a no-go with this recipe, he won't eat it. I do continue to use this recipe, but I only make half so as to avoid waste.

This was really quick and good but i did need to add some milk before 2nd microwave and it came out really creamy. I don't buy american cheese so used just cheddar maybe thats why. But i liked it the way it came out

This tasted much better than the store bought brand. However, it's only good right after you cook it. After it's cooled down, it doesn't taste great, and it gets oily after reheating.
