Original recipe yields 2 dozen



  1. In a medium bowl, cream together the shortening and sugar. Stir in the eggs, vanilla and molasses. Sift together the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and salt; stir into the molasses mixture. Shape dough into a log 2 inches in diameter. Wrap in wax paper and refrigerate overnight.
  2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees c). Grease cookie sheets or line with parchment paper.
  3. Unwrap cookie dough, and cut into 1/4 to 1/2 inch slices. Place on prepared cookie sheets and bake for 10 to 12 minutes in the preheated oven. Remove from baking sheets to cool on wire racks.

I tried o make this recipe. The dough never got firm and when I tried to bake it, the cookies all melted so that you only had one big cookie sheet covered with dough. I had to try a different recipe. I would never use this recipe again!



This recipe turned out to be a sticky mess. In the morning, the dough was as soft as it was the night before. I followed it to a tee, and still it was a mess. Not sure I will try it again.



Wonderful flavor but when I was making this recipe, the dough was way too soft to shape into a roll. I had to add a whole cup of flour before it was firm enought to shape.
