“Delicious pinto bean recipe that does not include pork but still has an awesome flavor. My family loves it! Serve over hot cooked rice.” - by pammy061372

Directions

  1. Wash and pick over the beans, then place them in a large bowl. Fill the bowl with cold water, and soak the beans for 6 to 8 hours.
  2. Drain and rinse the beans, then place into a slow cooker. Pour in 8 cups of water. Stir in onion, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and bay leaves. Place the turkey leg into the cooker, cover, and cook on Low setting for 6 hours. Stir in olive oil, and add more water if the beans are beginning to dry out; cook until the beans are very tender, an additional 2 hours.

"These beans were good but I altered the recipe a bit. I didn't have a spare smoked turkey laying around so I used chopped leftover ham instead. Tasted great! I also added Paula Deen's House Seasoni..." See moreng to the beans when I added the olive oil. Wasn't sure how the olive oil would taste, but it turned out great. I usually make my beans on the stove top and add vegetable oil. I also cooked the beans on high the whole time which gave me more of a "pot liquor" which I love to sop up with my corn bread. I will surely be making these again. :)"
