Original recipe yields 14 servings

Directions

  1. Place the bratwurst into a large skillet with 1 tablespoon of bacon drippings over medium heat; cook and stir the bratwurst until the pieces are browned and no longer pink inside, about 15 minutes. Drain excess grease.
  2. Place remaining 1 tablespoon of bacon drippings in a large, deep pot over medium heat, and cook and stir the onion, green and jalapeno peppers, and garlic until the onion is translucent, about 8 minutes. Place the bratwurst into the pot with the vegetables, and stir in the sauerkraut, red beans, petite diced tomatoes, crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato juice, beer, salt, black pepper, cumin, chili powder, sugar, garlic powder, paprika, allspice, and oregano.
  3. Bring the chili to a boil, reduce heat to a simmer, and stir in the milk chocolate until melted and dissolved. Simmer for 5 hours, stirring occasionally.

Wow! I made this chili for a chili feed and it turned out great! I tweaked it a little bit but the flavor was amazing! Definitely will be making it again, and recommend to others. It was judged 4th out of 30 different recipes!

This recipe is really good! I wanted to respond to JanKrzyz whom reviewed this chili that that's great you love the chili recipe! Though, if it's really good like you say you should give it at least 4 stars or 5 stars, because browsing recipe-seekers will see that you only gave it one star and think the recipe is terrible (since you're the only reviewer so far). Just wanted to help you!

After hearing friends talk about a local chili that has sauerkraut in it and how good it was, I decided to make my own version. My girlfriend and I put this recipe together on a Sunday afternoon and it turned out better than expected. I can usually buy bulk beer brat sausage from a local grocery but they were out. So we got the links, removed the casings and broke them up real fine while browning instead of cutting into pieces. Going to enter this recipe in a chili cookoff in a couple weeks. We hope everyone enjoys it as much as we did.
