“What makes these puff pastry turnovers Cuban? It's the tasty combination of ham, cheese and pork seasoned with mustard and pickles. Give these a try...they're really good.” - by Campbell's Kitchen

Directions

  1. Heat the oven to 400 degrees F. Stir the honey and water in a small bowl.
  2. Unfold the pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface. Roll the pastry sheet into a 12-inch square. Cut into 4 (6-inch) squares.
  3. Spread 1 teaspoon mustard on each pastry square to within 1/2 inch of the edge. Layer each with 2 ham slices, 2 cheese slices, 1 pickle slice and 2 pork slices. Brush the edges of the pastry squares with water. Fold the pastry over the filling to form a triangle and crimp with a fork to seal. Brush the filled pastries with the honey mixture. Sprinkle with the sesame seeds. Place the pastries onto a baking sheet.
  4. Bake for 20 minutes or until the pastries are golden brown. Let the pastries cool on the baking sheet on a wire rack for 5 minutes.

"These browned up nicely, had good flavor, but there was one major problem...they were soggy on the bottom. I expected to eat this with my hands (like you would with a turnover) but ended up eating it..." See more with a knife & fork. It was so wet on the bottom that it was falling apart when I was trying to get it off the baking sheet. Could be the meat released a little liquid, but more likely, it was the pickle slice juice. You may be able to avoid the sogginess issue just by shoving the pickle in AFTER it has baked. Dill pickles are an essential ingredient on a Cuban, so you do need them. Whatever, it was a disappointment. I think I'll stick to making my Cuban panini-style."
