“This magical macaroni dish will make a disappearing act on the dinner table. I've not only served it up as a main dish during the week, but I've served it as a side dish on the Thanksgiving table. It's got ham and cheese, but I think the secret ingredients are the half-and-half and eggs. Don't forget to cook the noodles with the chicken bouillon cubes for a really flavorful noodle. Enjoy!” - by StephPage

Original recipe yields 1 8-inch square casserole

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease an 8-inch square baking dish.
  2. Dissolve chicken bouillon cubes in water in a large pot; bring to a boil. Cook macaroni in the boiling water until cooked through but firm to the bite, 8 minutes; drain.
  3. Layer about half the macaroni in the bottom of the prepared baking dish; top with about half the diced smoked ham. Repeat layers.
  4. Whisk eggs, half-and-half, salt, and white pepper together in a bowl; pour over the noodle and ham layers. Top everything with Cheddar cheese.
  5. Bake in preheated oven until the cheese is melted and browning around the edges, about 35 minutes.

"In reviewing the ingredients, there's nothing in the recipe to make it "Italian", so I'm kinda scratching my head as to why it was added as part of the description. Made the recipe as written and bak..." See moreed up fine. I was a bit concerned with the finished texture of the Mac/Cheese, it wasn't creamy cheese, but more of a firm flan/custard like sauce after baking. There's not much "cheese" IN the recipe so much as its a topping. My husband enjoyed it and 1 of 2 boys did as well. I just couldn't get around the texture and lack of cheese in the sauce and lack of seasoning. I included Italian seasoning into this recipe, so at least I'd be able to say its Italian Mac & Cheese."
