Nanny (Evelyn Lantz) was from Louisville, KY and passed this recipe to Grandma Loebach who passed to Gram and then to us. Nanny always said she'd live to be 100 and no older and that's what she did!

Directions

  1. Put green beans in a large pot. Pour enough water into the pot to cover about 2/3 of the beans. Sprinkle sugar over the green beans. Add bacon and onion to the pot. Bring the water to a simmer over medium-low heat and cook until the beans are soft, about 2 hours. Season with salt and pepper to serve.

Never used sugar in green beans but it was nice. I was leary and just added 1 tablespoon. I always brown cook the bacon in the pot before adding the beans removing some grease. But I think you have something with the sugar!

I loved it and it was so easy. I always thought that green beans from the garden would be a lot of work and was very pleasantly surprised. The sugar seemed fine, actually we never noticed it at all. Super simple and delicious.
