Directions

  1. Pour peas in a saucepan and cover with water. Bring water to a boil, reduce heat to medium-low, and simmer until peas are hot and tender, 5 to 7 minutes; drain.
  2. Cook and stir bacon in a large skillet over medium-high heat until the fat renders and the bacon is crisp, 7 to 10 minutes. Stir onion into the bacon dripping; cook and stir with the bacon until tender, 5 to 7 minutes.
  3. Pour cream over the bacon mixture; cook and stir until the cream thickens, about 5 minutes. Season thickened cream with monosodium glutamate, salt, and pepper. Pour sherry into the thickened cream. Add drained peas and mushrooms to the skillet; gently stir to coat.

We loved this side dish! There was a lot of flavor and would make a great side to a holiday meal. I did make these ahead and kept them warm in the oven like recommended. This will definitely be made again!

I doubled the recipe for a potluck at work and everyone loved it. I used canned mushrooms and yellow onion. There was no oven available so I just heated it in the microwave right before serving.

I agree with Bonnie about the MSG, you've got to be joking. Here in Australia they've banned it from use for health reasons. I make a similar peas, bacon and mushroom sides, but healthier without the cream and of course that rotten MSG. I did try this, but only the once and that was enough for me. I'll stick to my recipe, thanks.
