This is an old recipe passed down from my great-grandma. I remember the whole family getting together on Sunday afternoons and she would always have a feast ready for us. This was always a family favorite.

Directions

  1. Place bacon in a large skillet; cook and stir over medium-high heat until evenly browned and crispy, about 10 minutes. Add lettuce; cook and stir in the bacon grease until lettuce wilts, 2 to 3 minutes. Mix buttermilk, salt, and pepper into bacon-lettuce mixture; cook and stir until buttermilk sauce thickens, 5 to 10 minutes. Whisk flour into sauce if needed to thicken.

Made this with our first lettuce from the garden. It was not a head of red leaf, but instead a mixture of red and green leaf lettuce. It was better than we both were anticipating. You do have to be careful when adding the buttermilk as it wants to curdle. I did add a little Wondra® as a thickening agent rather than the flour at the end.
