  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 9x13 inch pan. Sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and ginger. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the margarine, shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla. Beat in the flour mixture alternately with the buttermilk, mixing just until incorporated. Pour batter into prepared pan.
  3. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Allow to cool.
  4. To make the Maple-Flavored Seven Minute Frosting: In a saucepan, heat maple syrup until boiling. Let boil for an additional 5 minutes. In a large glass or metal mixing bowl, beat egg whites until foamy. Gradually pour in hot maple syrup, continuing to beat until stiff peaks form.

I tried this recipe with the Cream Cheese Frosting II (basic) with 1 tsp cinnamon. It tastes really great with the extra spice added.

It tasted good, but it looked scary when it was done. I don't think I beat the frosting enough, even though I did it for 40 minutes. So after I frosted the cake, it looked very frothy an hour la...

I baked this cake for my Husband's birthday...It turned out great...I didn't need to add cornstarch...It also tasted like pumkin too....

This recipe was a failure. It smelled bette than it tasted. It didn't have enough taste to it. I thought it was bad, but maybe it's an aquired taste.

This is bar far THE MOST requested cake in my house. Its moist and delicious. I use cream cheese frosting and add more cinnamon because I always add more cinnamon to any recipe that has it in it...
