Original recipe yields 5 dozen
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
- In a large bowl, mix together the shortening, brown sugar, applesauce and egg until smooth, Combine the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon and cloves; stir into the applesauce mixture. Drop dough by rounded teaspoons onto ungreased cookie sheets.
- Bake for 10 to 12 minutes in the preheated oven. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes before removing to a wire rack to cool completely.

"I hate leaving low stars but this recipe leaves one wanting. The potential for a delicious cookie is there, given the ingredients, but the result misses the boat. The cookies turned out surprisingly..." See more bland; the spices definitely need to be upped, or perhaps an addition of finely diced apples or ginger would give a kick. Also, the texture is a bit too spongy for my liking. This recipe pales in comparison to other autumn spice cookies and is not a keeper."
