Original recipe yields 6 servings

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Place the whole pita breads in a single layer on a baking sheet. Bake for 5 minutes, or until lightly toasted.
  2. In a medium bowl, mix together the tuna, mayonnaise, relish, dill and salt. Spread an equal amount of the tuna mixture onto each of the pita breads. Arrange tomato wedges over the tuna, and sprinkle with shredded Cheddar cheese.
  3. Bake for 5 minutes in the preheated oven, or until cheese has melted.

"Just a couple of changes to a tuna melt, but its nice when someone writes it down. We use some "Finlandia Rye" pitas, there about 4" to 5" across, but the extra flavour and nutrition is great. Like ..." See moremany others, I now omit the salt, or I use a pinch of sea salt. My favourite change is to replace the tomato with red/yellow/orange bell pepper. Just cut the pepper into 1/2" strips, put about 4 on a pita, between the cheese and tuna. Bell peppers have three times the vitamin c of an orange."
