  2. Heat asparagus and chicken broth together in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Stir in milk, if using, and bring to a low simmer. Stir in butter to finish, if using, and season to taste with salt and pepper.

I did not care for this at all. The taste of the canned asparagus is still with me, and there was a bunch of stringy, hard pieces. Sorry...but go for the fresh asparagus.
