Original recipe yields 18 servings

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees F (150 degrees C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the oats, almonds, wheat germ, sunflower seeds, flax seeds, cinnamon, nutmeg, canola oil, and honey. Spread evenly over the prepared baking sheet, pressing down lightly with the back of a spoon.
  3. Bake 20 minutes in the preheated oven, or until lightly browned. Allow to cool completely.
  4. In a large bowl, break the cooled granola into large chunks. Mix in the raisins, pineapple, sweetened dried cranberries, and papaya. Store in an airtight container.

I've been testing several granola recipes lately. This one is my favorite! I do make some changes, and like the recipe description says, it's very versatile! I use 1/2 cup flax seed (the miracle grain, as I call it) and omit the wheat germ and sunflower seeds. I use 1/2 cup sliced almonds and 1/2 cup chopped walnuts. I also add 1 tsp. vanilla extract. I love the nutmeg and cinnamon - it smells so good baking! For cost reasons, I only use raisins and dried cranberries for the fruit. I end up baking mine for almost 40 minutes until it is toasted and crunchy. It clumps up very nicely. Hint: stir the oil and honey together first before adding to oat mixture.

Very good granola. I quadrupled the recipe but only made 2 1/2x the syrup (oil and honey). I combined all the dry ingredients (except for the dry fruit and placed it in the oven for about 20 minutes to toast them up. I combined the oil and honey in a saucepan with the cinnamon and a pinch of salt and brought it to a boil. This thinned out the honey and made it easier to pour over all the dry ingredients. I added the dried fruit 1/2 way thru the baking so they would not burn. I needed to bake the granola for much much longer than suggested. But it was very good.

I have been following & making this reciped for 3 months now. My only modification is to half the recipe (since I'm the only one who eats it) and omit the sunflower seeds (not a fan). Otherwise, I have memorized this recipe and eat it mixed w/what ever at least 5 days a week!
