  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease one 9x13 inch baking pan.
  2. Bring water to a boil. Pour over chopped dates and baking soda. Let stand until cool. Stir in the sugar, flour, mayonnaise, and salt. Mix until just combined. Pour batter into prepared pan.
  3. Mix the brown sugar, chopped nuts, and chocolate chips together. Sprinkle over top of batter.
  4. Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 40 to 45 minutes.

Has anyone tried this? My family was very disappointed as the only good about it was the topping. It was heavy and chewy and tasteless.

This recipe sounds like the one my Mother use to make when I was a young girl. After her death her recipes were lost in the moving. I do remember that my mother never did anything with the top...

This recipe is easy to make and is a very moist cake. My Mom has made this for years and it is a family favorite. Even people that say they don't like dates,just love this cake.
