  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease one 9x13 inch baking pan.
  2. Bring water to a boil. Pour over chopped dates and baking soda. Let stand until cool. Stir in the sugar, flour, mayonnaise, and salt. Mix until just combined. Pour batter into prepared pan.
  3. Mix the brown sugar, chopped nuts, and chocolate chips together. Sprinkle over top of batter.
  4. Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 40 to 45 minutes.

This recipe is easy to make and is a very moist cake. My Mom has made this for years and it is a family favorite. Even people that say they don't like dates,just love this cake.

Topping ingredients are WAY OFF. I ended up using 1 cup (of each) nuts, brown sugar and chocolate chips.

I think this would be very good if made by the recipe. I tried to double the amount of topping, so it got a little burnt before the cake got done. It was still good, though. I will try it again ...
