Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 9 inch square baking pan.
  2. To make crust: In a large bowl, cream shortening, white sugar and brown sugar. Separate egg and beat in yolk and vanilla, stirring until well blended. Slowly add in the flour and blend well. Mixture will be stiff.
  3. Press dough evenly into baking pan. Bake for 18 to 20 minutes, or until top is golden brown.
  4. Melt the chocolate in a double boiler over low heat. Spread the melted chocolate over warm crust. Sprinkle top with almonds. Let cool on wire rack before cutting.

Do NOT use unsweetened chocolate - it makes the recipe taste horrendous. We had much better success when we switched to semi-sweet - did not get the strange, twisted faces from people tasting the bitter chocolate.

Interesting treat. I used almond extract instead of vanilla as the submitter suggested and I am glad I did because even with it the base almost tasted like butterscotch. I can't imagine using sweetened chocolate if you follow the recipe for the base. I did as instructed and used unsweetened and still found for my taste, I could cut the sugar back. Thanks, Gayla
