May 15, 2013 12:55 PMThe video and the written directions are different where the batter is concerned. The video shows egg, baking powder and beer in the batter. The written directions include the 1/2 c. flour which is not correct, so beware. It should be rewritten to avoid confusion. There should be a bowl of 1/2 c. flour, then another with 1/4 c. flour and 2 c. coconut.

May 11, 2013 10:23 AMALL alcohol cooks off, but the taste of the hops in the beer remains... so if you don't LIKE the taste of beer, or if you are a recovering alcoholic who LOVES BEER & fears it may lead to falling off the wagon, then club soda can be substituted for the beer. The beer does not necessarily give a "better flakiness" but rather gives it a light "puffiness" - which is caused by the 'carbonation' and probably a chemical reaction with the baking powder (the 'beer batter' made with soda water is a typical 'tempura' batter)
