To avoid the MSG trap, just make your own dashi stock from bonito flakes and kombu. It only takes a few minutes.

Hi Pam, I had the same difficulty finding Dashi that was MSG-free, and online sources were quite pricey. However, I found a super formula to make it from scratch!! Here's the Link: http://www.lafujimama.com/2010/01/how-to-make-dashi/

Unfortunately one of the first ingredients in Hondashi brand dashi granules is MSG. I hate to think every time I've enjoyed miso soup at a restaurant I've been eating MSG, but it kind of looks that way. If anyone knows a brand of dashi that doesn't contain MSG, please email me. This was the only brand found in my local Lion market.
