Jul 3, 2012 5:19 PMWhat a great story! I especially enjoyed the part about Americans pooling and sharing their rations. Limitations make people try harder and they get us out of ruts. I think that is one of our modern issues is that we have so many choices and so few limitations we are not often forced to be innovative and sometimes we are only innovative when forced. Sometimes people make fun of Americana type cooking but I am sure much of it was born out of WarII rationing on a young and developing culture. I must admit that the ''cake'' doesn't look that appetizing to me but I am going to try it. I think I will use it as a base for my flag cake this 4th.
